Master’s Thesis Project in Population Genetics/Bioinformatics

The Hancock group at the Max Planck Institute for Plant Breeding Research in Cologne is looking for a Master’s student to join our research group, which focuses on understanding the molecular basis of adaptation to the environment using a combination of quantitative genetics, population genetics, field biology and functional genetic analysis.
The student will use computational approaches to reconstruct the demographic and adaptive histories of natural Arabidopsis thaliana populations from Africa. The main focus will be on applying recently-developed approaches for genome-wide coalescent tree inference.
The ideal candidate has experience with one or more high-level programming languages (e.g., Python, Java, C/C++) and R and has taken courses in population genetics and/or bioinformatics and/or quantitative genetics.
In addition, the applicant should be organized, able to work as part of a team, and have excellent attention to detail. The working language of the laboratory is English. Therefore, strong English language skills are necessary. During the research and writing phases, income will be provided via a student assistantship.
